ABOUT • TUKI LAUMEA

Tuki Laumea is an award-winning director with over 22 years of experience – known for making documentaries and television across the globe and locally at home in Aotearoa New Zealand. Over the past 8 years, he has focused on highlighting issues and history in the Pacific, reflecting his deep connection to his roots and his expertise in creating compelling, culturally rich narratives. These projects have earned him multiple 'Best Pasifika Program' awards at the New Zealand Television Awards (2018 & 2021).

As a director with a journalistic background, Tuki spent five years living in Doha and working for Al Jazeera English. Tuki covered pivotal events such as the Arab Spring and other significant conflicts, working across Africa, Europe, and the Middle East. During this time he received a Robert F. Kennedy Award for Journalism, two Monte Carlo Cine Golden Eagles, an Amnesty International award, and a BAFTA nomination for ‘Bahrain: Shouting in the Dark’. Before his time with Al Jazeera, he worked at New Zealand networks like TV3 and TVNZ – in presenting, acting, and producing roles.

Known for his ability to connect with people from all backgrounds, Tuki's multicultural upbringing has shaped his expansive and empathetic worldview. Born to a 'kiwi' mother of Croatian descent and a Samoan father, his childhood was split between Samoa and attending a Steiner School in Auckland, NZ. This dual experience grounded him culturally and nurtured his innate artistic vision. He later spent time in Austria where he learned to speak German. Tuki's unique blend of diverse cultural influences has enhanced his lens on current events and history – which informs his approach to storytelling.

Tuki is currently based between Auckland, Aotearoa New Zealand, and Cairns, Australia. He is the co-founder of the production company Nine Island’s Media – which he formed with producer, journalist, and life-partner Cleo Fraser. The company provides high-quality content for businesses and entities seeking impactful storytelling.
